A broad definition of Sustainable is:

"Use of the Earth's resources at a rate at which they can be replenished."

The design stage of a project is an ideal time to work toward this because at the early stages changes are cheaper and easier to make.

Approaches to Sustainable Design that we can make include:

• Thoughtful use of the site
• Considering sustainability at the early stages when locating a building or adapting one can be very effective
• Minimize energy requirements
• Protect and conserve water
• Choose materials and products with consideration for their effects
• Design for a quality indoor environment
• Consider maintenance, durability and reuse
• Design a building as part of the overall environment: landscape, ecology and society.
